Roller Chains & Sprockets

Hydra Seals are now stocking Dunlop Roller Chain & Sprockets

DUNLOP Roller chain & Sprocket is the most common form of power transmission, consisting of short cylindrical rollers joined together by side links. It interlinks with the sprocket teeth and rotation between the two creates reliable and efficient power transmission.

In a previous article on 5 maintenance tips for roller chain & sprockets, we discussed the importance of using quality heat treated chain. Dunlops chain is of the very highest quality and manufactured to main ISO standards.

Roller chain and sprockets are used on a wide range of applications from bicycles to industrial and agricultural machinery. Roller chain and sprockets provide high power, synchronous drive systems and are manufactured from high quality materials and finished to tight dimensional tolerances. Dunlop Roller Chain & Sprocket is reliable and has considerably long service life.

British & American standard, 1/4″ to 2″ pitch is available from stock and in a wide range of materials and finishes such as steel, stainless steel and nickel plated. Such components will permit the functioning of precision a gear system. Sprockets are available with either a pilot or taper bore, the latter designed for use with pre-machined taper bushes that are finished with the required bore and keyway size.

5 Maintenance Tips for Industrial Chain & Sprocket

5 Tips to ensure your industrial chain is in good working order

  1. Have a maintenance Schedule

Do you maintain your conveyors in-house or externally, but either way, the roller chain and the sprockets should be inspected regularly. So sit down with the maintenance crew and have a proper maintenance planning schedule setup. Some chain needs to be lubricated, regularly. They may also be in need to alignment. We suggest having all the components checked out, adjusted and cleaned on a quarterly basis. Worn or damaged parts should be replaced or scheduled for replacement at a time that is suitable to minimise downtime.

It’s important to do this with heavy machinery as accidents or fatalities could occur, not alone waste precious production time. This plan will clearly define what needs to be done, by who and will entrust to a maintenance manager to be delegated to the relevant team.

  1. Choose the oil and method of lubrication wisely.

Ensure that Roller chains and drives that are protected against dirt and generally an petroleum based oil is used to lubricate. We can advise on which oil should be used depending on your chain.

There are generally four ways to lubricate chain…

  1. Stream lubrication
  2. Manual lubrication
  3. Disk lubrication
  4. Drip lubrication

The speed on power transmission of the chain dictate which method should be used. Wear and tear is avoid through proper lubrication of industrial chain and its sprockets, and acts as a cushion or barrier from the impact of loads.

  1. Use Quality Heat Treated Chain.

Properly applied heat treating of components will improve the quality of the chain. If improperly applied, the quality can degrade, so it is imperative that the heat is regulated.

Case depth and case hardness are two factors to be considered, and must be in ranges that maximise durability and resistance. If the depth of the case hardness is too deep, brittles can occur leading to breakages in the chain.

  1. Ensure the right tension and alignment.

Just like a timing belt or timing chain, the correct tension needs to apply. A proper maintenance plan should calculate the slack on the chain and adjust accordingly. Removing one or two pitches” generally takes up the slack. Do not connect old chain to new, just replace the chain, as old chain can get caught and result in the damaging of the new chain and spread to the roller sprockets. Regular checks of the sprockets prevent additional abnormal sprocket and chain wear.

  1. Hardened Parts Prevent Wear

For majority of the machinery in the construction industry, the main drawbacks with roller chain is this chain and the sprockets. This is the primary cause for the chain stretching, eventually leading to failure and a full replacement of the chain and sprockets will need to be done.

To combat this problem, get solid roller chains that manufactured with parts boasting high surface hardness. This significantly improves the wear resistance, extends life, and boosts performance in harsh environments.

Roller chains should be thoroughly inspected for deformed, cracked or broken parts. If any of these conditions are found, replace the entire chain … regardless of whether parts of the chain looks to be good condition.

Dunlop Sprockets are available with either a pilot or taper bore, the latter designed for use with pre-machined taper bushes that are finished with the required bore and key way size. Pilot bore sprockets are manufactured to internationally recognised standards (British & American). Produced from C45 steel, they have a black phosphated finish to increase corrosion resistance, so extending the sprockets working life. We have 1/4″ to 2″ pitch is available from stock to suit and in a wide range of materials and finishes such as steel, stainless steel and nickel plated. Such components will permit the functioning of precision a gear system.

DUNLOP Roller chains are used on a wide range of applications from bicycles to industrial and agricultural machinery.

They are available in ‘Simplex’, ‘Duplex’ and ‘Triplex’ and in varying range of materials and plating options, such as stainless steel, nickel plated, and zinc plated. DUNLOP also offers attachments which are available along with connecting links and single and double offset links.  Roller chain and sprockets provide high power, synchronous drive systems and are manufactured from high quality materials and finished to tight dimensional tolerances.
